John Newton wrote “Amazing Grace” in 1779; and only he could write it with such meaning. “Amazing Grace” was the story of his life. Every word was pulled with pain from the dark days and the treacherous times of his early sea-faring youth to the wondrous joy of his discovery of the love of God. His epitaph, written by his own hand, tells more eloquently then any other words the extent of depth and height he experienced. “John Newton, clerk, once an infidel and libertine, was by the rich mercy of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy. Every line of his hymn is filled with tears of remorse because of the greatness of his sin, and expressions of joy because of the discovery of Gods Grace. | “Thought For The Day” Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me; I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see. |
