The Book of Judges is the seventh book of the Bible and it continues our review into the 'History' section of the Bible. Our summary of it is:
Who wrote Judges and when?
It is attributed to Samuel and written over the 1086-1004 BC time-frame.
What is it all about?
It tells of the Israelite history before their kings. It tells of the Israelites' failures, of their 12 Judges (Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jair, Jephthat, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon and Samson), how these judges arose and lead their people in times of great difficulty. And it should be noted that not only did the nation of Israel stumble greatly (their moral corruption), that their leaders raised up – these judges - were in many ways flawed as well but God used them to help save the Israelites time and time again.
Why should we know this? From it we can learn of the importance in remaining loyal to God. For when we don't, we should not be surprised by the messes that we get ourselves into. ”In those days Israel had no King; everyone did as they saw fit.” (Judges 21:25)
