Our review of the Bible continues with a look at the nineteenth book,
the Book of Psalms.
the Book of Psalms.
What is it all about? Dr. J. Vernon McGee's recommends that we keep in mind that the Psalms follow the outline of the first 5 books of the Bible ('the Law' aka 'the Torah') - as a reinforcement of the lessons to be learned by the Israelites (and as what God wants us all to know).
For example: Psalms 1-41 represent the Genesis section (the Man in View, his blessedness, fall and recovery), Psalms 42-72 represent the Exodus section (the Israel in View, ruin and redemption), Psalms 73-89 represent the Leviticus section (the Sanctuary in View, darkness and dawn), Psalms 90-106 represents the Numbers section (the Earth in View, peril and protection) and Psalms 107-150 represents the Deuteronomy section (the Word of God in View, perfection and praise).
Why should we know this? The Book of Psalms is the hymnal of the Bible, a collection of prayers and praises that express the hearts of a broken people experiencing life in a broken world. From how the Psalms are aligned, we learn there was a purpose. They help us to know who will be blessed, that we will struggle, that we should pursue our faith, that we should ask for God's mercy, that we should believe in the future Messianic King (Psalm 22), and that we should praise God.
